Bad Karma
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 20.45 $A TRUE CRIME THRILLER THAT EXPLORES THE DARKEST REGIONS OF ROMANTIC INFATUATION.THE YEAR: 1969THE SETTING: Berkeley, CaliforniaTHE STORY: Amidst the turmoil of student rebellion two loners encounter each other and turn an innocent flirtation into a dance of death.THE CHARACTERS: Prosenjit Poddar was the brilliant engineering student who wanted nothing more than to return to his native India a big success and to marry a woman of his parents' choosing.Tanya Tarasoff was the naïve coed who just wanted somebody to love. And Larry Moore was the young psychologist who thought he recognized the warning signs that his patient was not just suffering from a jilted love affair... but was about to commit an act of murder.THE STAKES: In a culture clash that pits the traditional values of male-dominated India against free-love attitudes of Berkeley in the '60s, an impending tragedy unfolds. Bad Land
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 29.84 $In 1993 Jonathan Raban entered the Badlands, a place the size of England and the least visited region in all of the United States. Here he came across the ruins of a community and isolated homesteads. These homes, he realized, gave clues as to the characters and lives of the thousands of landless people who, seduced by the advertising of the railroad companies in the early 20th century, took the train West in search of new lives and a permanent agricultural community. What had happened to turn these homesteaders' hopes of a new beginning into such despair? The land which betrayed them turned out to be an America in miniature. This is their story.

Assault on the Deadwood Stage: Road Agents and Shotgun Messengers
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 26.93 $In the 1870s, Deadwood was a thriving—and largely lawless—boomtown. And as any fan of western history and films knows, stagecoach robberies were a regular feature of life in this fabled region of Dakota Territory. Now, for the first time, Robert K. DeArment tells the story of the "good guys and bad guys" behind these violent crimes: the road agents who wreaked havoc on Deadwood's roadways and the shotgun messengers who battled to protect stagecoach passengers and their valuable cargo.DeArment shows in dramatic detail how for two years gangs of robbers ruled the road, perpetrating holdups and killings, until lawmen and stage-company and railroad agents finally brought an end to the mayhem. The characters populating this violent tale include such legendary figures as Wild Bill Hickok and the famous railroad detective James L. "Whispering" Smith, a formidable opponent of bandits. We also get to know the men who operated the stages, the lawmen and company men who ran and defended the coaches, and the outlaws who fought against them. DeArment tells where these men came from and what became of them after the outlawry ended. He ends his account in the 1880s with Buffalo Bill's Wild West show and its spectacular rendition of a shotgun robbery, featuring an actual Deadwood stagecoach. After nearly a century and a half, the Deadwood stage continues to command our attention.

Dying the Good Death The Pilgrimage to Die in India's Holy City
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 38.65 $Exploring the Hindu concepts of good and bad deaths, this rich ethnography follows pilgrims who choose to travel to the holy city of Kashi to die.Dying the Good Death is a unique ethnography, the first to focus on the experiences of dying at the end of the life cycle. In a region of northern India, some people at the end of their lives leave their villages and travel to the Hindu holy city of Kashi to die. These pilgrims expect that by dying in Kashi they will obtain the spiritual reward of moksha―liberation from the cycle of death and rebirth.Based on fieldwork conducted in Kashi’s hospices or “mansions of liberation,” Christopher Justice introduces us to a number of dying individuals and their families, providing rich and evocative descriptions of their remarkable experiences. The social contexts of these experiences are explored through descriptions of the families who provide care and the priests who chant the name of God twenty-four hours a day. The book also has clear implications for the potential ways in which we may choose to face the ends of our lives.
